Asahi Denka Europe GmbH, Düsseldorf, Germany, offers R-Mevalonolactone, a small molecule that stimulates the skin from the inside, according to company executives. The ingredient, which is sold in Japan through Kanebo and is also gaining interest in Europe, recently became available in the U.S. According to Asahi executives, R-Mevalonolactone passes the skin’s membranes to reach the golgi apparat in the granulosum, stimulating HMG-CoA reductase and the R-Mevalonolacton itself to synthesize into cholesterol. Cholesterol protects the skin in the extra-cellular lipids. The ingredient is appropriate for anti-aging formulations.
